Coolsculpting

“We always have our eyes open to the emerging technologies in body sculpting,” says Dr. Jeffrey Viscomi. “This one is a breakthrough in modalities, the total opposite of conventional treatments that melt fat. CoolSculpt actually freezes fat cells to eliminate them.”

Interestingly, the idea was developed by Harvard scientists who discovered that overweight children who ate popsicles all of the time experienced fat atrophy in their cheeks. This observation led to medical research that has resulted in CoolSculpting.

This FDA-cleared device utilizes cryolipolysis—the non-invasive cooling of the fatty layer of tissue to induce the breakdown of fat cells without damaging other tissues of the body. CoolSculpting cools the fat cells to temperatures that trigger their natural death, but because fat cells crystalize faster in the body than other cells, there is no damage to nerves or other tissue. Over time, the patient’s own body will naturally metabolize and eliminate the dead fat cells. “CoolSculpt is ideal for patients who are looking to target site-specific fat, such as stubborn love handles, a lower belly pooch, or back fat,” he says. It targets fat cells alone, eliminating them in an easy, non-intrusive fashion that exercise and diet can’t achieve as quickly or as effectively. Unlike lasers, sonic waves or surgery to remove fat, there is no downtime, no knives, no needles, and no scarring.

The one-hour procedure is conducted with relatively little discomfort and allows you to immediately go back to your daily activities. Over the next few weeks you will continue to see a reduction of fat in the treated areas as your body naturally disposes of the fat cells. One of the first patients to opt for CoolSculpt at Docere, Dawn F., of Brunswick, has a typical tale to tell. No matter how much she exercised after giving birth to her two children, she could not lose the poochie belly. When this busy mom heard about CoolSculpt, it seemed like the ideal answer to getting her pre-baby bod back. “During the one-hour visit, I laid on my back while the cooling device gently drew up my lower abdomen into a rounded chamber to be cooled,” Dawn explains. “It felt chilly at first, then a little numb, but there was no pain.

The great thing about CoolSculpt is I notice a difference after a few weeks, but it keeps getting better as my body naturally eliminates the crystallized fat cells, so I’ll continue to see my belly fat disappear over the next few months.” CoolSculpt takes very little time and is pretty simple to fit into a lunch hour. Dr. Viscomi says clients can opt for one treatment to address a specific area then add other treatments for other parts of abdomen, back or flanks.

Says Lori Leonard, who owns Docere, “Once fat cells are gone, they’re gone. As long as patients maintain a normal diet and exercise, the long-term results should remain stable.” Dr. Viscomi says that seeing the real-life before-and-after cases of fat loss is pretty amazing.

“This procedure allows us to go where we’ve always wanted to go in terms of non-invasive body sculpting,” he notes. CoolSculpt is just the newest technology among Docere’s advanced aesthetic treatment platforms. Lori says that since founding the laser spa in 2009 the goal has been to bring the latest technologies to the area. “We want to be progressive with advancements that produce dramatic results and are proven safe,” she says. “Over the past year we’ve invested more than $250,000 in new lasers, the CoolSculpt technology, as well as sending our staff to ongoing education.”
